Understanding the Duration of an Echocardiogram: What to Expect

An echocardiogram, also known as an echo or cardiac ultrasound, is a non-invasive medical test used to assess the structure and function of the heart. It is a valuable diagnostic tool for detecting various heart conditions and providing critical information to healthcare professionals. One common question among individuals is how long does an echocardiogram take.

The duration of an echocardiogram can vary depending on several factors, including the type of echocardiogram, the complexity of the case, and the experience of the technician performing the test. In general, a standard transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete. During this test, a technician will apply a special gel to your chest and use a handheld transducer to capture images of your heart's chambers and valves.

On the other hand, a transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) may take a bit longer, usually around 30 to 45 minutes. TEE involves inserting a small, flexible tube with an ultrasound probe down the throat to obtain more detailed images of the heart.
